Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard conceded that he had “not been good enough” this season.
Odegaard has delivered 23 goals and 17 assists in the last two Premier League seasons, but has so far only scored twice and has scored three other goals during the current campaign.
But one of its best performances for a long time occurred on Tuesday when Arsenal beat the PSV Eindhoven 7-1 during the first leg of its Champions League.
The 26-year-old played the 90 minutes full in the Netherlands, scoring twice before helping a goal for Riccardo Calafiori. Speaking before the Premier League trip on Sunday to Manchester United, Odegaard challenged himself to produce more performance of this level.
“I am very used to people who talk about me, judging my performances and I do it myself,” he said. “I am more difficult with myself and I know that I was not good enough, especially in front of the goal.
“I work hard every day to improve it and I know that I have the capacity and the talent to do it. PSV Eindhoven was good and I hope that now I can do more towards the end of the season.

He added: “With the players we have (injured), the rest of us had to intensify even more. This is a good thing that we can share the goals and I hope that we can continue to do it.
Arsenal won 1-0 in Old Trafford at the end of last season. United has since lost seven of its last 23 home matches in all competitions, including humiliating defeats from Brighton and Crystal Palace this calendar year.
When asked if Old Trafford still carried a factor of fear for the opposing teams, Odegaard replied: “I don’t know. I mean, they are not where they want to be in the board.
“It’s a big club that had a little trouble. They have a lot of individual quality and when they play as a team, it is difficult to play them. But we are going there to win. We are Arsenal and we are not afraid.
Arsenal will go into the match of Sunday 16 points behind the leaders of the Premier League Liverpool, who came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday.
However, the Gunners are 21 points above United – which are well at the bottom of the table in 15th place.
