Arsenal and Manchester City are reportedly set to battle it out for the signature of Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

The Brazilian is said to have a release clause of around £100m, although interested clubs could strike a deal for a lower amount.

Magpies chief executive Darren Eales revealed earlier this year that the club could be forced to sell one of its key players in order to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

According to The Telegraph, this has led to Arsenal expressing interest in striker Alexander Isak, but they are now also looking to turn their attention to Guimaraes.

However, Premier League title rivals Man City are also keen on the 26-year-old, who has been one of the leading figures in Eddie Howe’s side since his 2022 signing from Lyon.

The report goes on to say that Guimaraes is aware of interest from both clubs, the central midfielder has also been linked with French champions PSG.

Mikel Arteta won a battle with his former boss Pep Guardiola for the signing of Declan Rice from West Ham last summer.

“I signed for the club and I am happy for the club, you never know what will happen but for my part I am happy in the club,” Guimaraes said in a press conference before the Brazil’s clash against England at Wembley last month.

“We are disappointed with the season but we still have a chance of finishing at least seventh and finishing in the Europa League or Conference League to put the club back in Europe.

“About the club staff, I can’t speak too much. I don’t know what will happen in the future but I am very grateful to Newcastle and happy for the club.

Newcastle enjoyed phenomenal success last season to finish in the top four and reach the Carabao Cup final – but it came at a price.

The Saudi owners pumped in their money and Newcastle announced losses of £73.4m for the financial year ending June 2023 and £150m in the last two.

A slew of unsuccessful summer signings and a spate of injuries have not helped the current hangover, although Howe’s side have recovered recently to sit sixth in the Premier League.
