Ariana Debose said that she did not know that she was quoting a criticism of her co-star of “West Side Story” Rachel Zegler when she published a quote reading “Narcissism is not something to be dump or encouraged” in an Instagram post since deleted on Tuesday.
“I post quotes all the time and I thought it was significant. I will fully face the fact that I did no research on the origin of this quote, and I did not know the connection until it was not reported,” wrote Debose on her Instagram history on Tuesday evening. “I have no intention of getting into a news cycle. It is not the first time that I have published on the treatment of narcissism and it will probably not be the last, but next time, I will be sure to clarify its origins first.”
Debose sparked speculation when she apparently targeted Zegler by reversing a viral quote made by Jonah Platt, the son of the producer of “Snow White” Marc Platt. In a position since deleted last week, Jonah Platt awarded the blame for the poor performance of the Disney remake box office in Zegler, who, according to him, had “trained his personal policy” in promoting the film.
In an Instagram publication since deleted Tuesday, Debose cited the last line of the original publication of Jonah Platt, writing “narcissism is not something to be animated or encouraged”, imposed on a bouquet of flowers. The position was withdrawn shortly after, Debose sharing a new declaration.
Debose and Zegler’s representatives did not immediately respond to VarietyComment request.
Jonah Platt, known for his podcast “Bey Jewish” and his roles in “Unpoude” by Netflix and “Being the Ricardos” by Aaron Sorkin, published his reflections on the star of “Snow White” on Instagram, responding to a comment that shared the report that his father went to New York City promotional of the film. Variety reported that the meeting was a failed attempt to have her withdraw an article on social networks in which she wrote: “And always remember, free Palestine.”
“Yeah, my father, the producer of the huge piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand her 20 -year -old employee to drag her personal policy in the promotion of the film for which she signed a several million dollars contract to be paid and advertise,” Jonah Platt wrote in the comment. “This is called the responsibility and responsibility of adults. And his actions clearly harm the film’s box office. ”
“Freedom of expression does not mean that you are allowed to say what you want in your private job without repercussions,” continued Platt. “Tens of thousands of people have worked on this film and she diverted the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all colleagues and crew workers and blue passes that depend on this film to succeed. Narcissism is not something to be bitten or encouraged.”
Other Hollywood stars supported the outside Zegler and his young career. The star of “The Last of Us”, Pedro Pascal, shared a photo of the actress on her Instagram stories with the “#icon” legend.
Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” was published in 2021 for critical success despite his poor box office draw. The film launched Zegler’s acting career, throwing her into the main role of María. He also earned Debose an Oscar of the actress for best support for her role as Anita.
