Are you looking for a job for the new year? These steps can help you get hired faster, experts say – NBC Chicago

  • Going from candidate to new employee can be a slow process.
  • Experts say following these three steps can help you land a new job faster.

If you’re looking for a new job, prepare to face more competition in the new year.

“We’re seeing a lot more job seekers coming to use our site in mid to late January,” said Scott Dobroski, career trends expert at Indeed.

“It fits this new year, this new mentality,” he said.

While layoffs made headlines in late 2023, some companies are still planning to eliminate positions in 2024, according to a recent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement and business and executive coaching firm.

The firm’s survey finds that 29% of companies have made layoffs in 2023, and 21% of them indicate they could eliminate positions in 2024. Meanwhile, 46% of companies reported an increase in hiring in 2023, and plan to continue recruiting new employees in 2024.

If you’re looking for a job, experts say there are several steps you can take to speed up your job search.

1. Leverage your network.

If you’re between jobs, take advantage of the option to set your status to “looking for a job” on professional networking sites, recommends Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster.

New Year’s Eve gatherings can be a great time to expand your professional contacts, she said.

As you add new contacts, make sure you have an updated resume with your most recent professional achievements. Your most recent performance reviews can be helpful in refreshing your memory, she said.

2. Use technological tools to boost your research.

With more competition for jobs in January, that could mean fewer positions will be available, according to Dobroski.

One way to get ahead of the competition is to use technology tools to help you broaden your search.

By creating online profiles with your skills, experience and the job you are looking for, you can find different positions that fit.

Dobroski said he has seen bank tellers become sales managers after identifying transferable skills for these new roles. Additionally, new salaries could exceed $30,000 or $35,000 more.

“Let technology work for you,” Dobroski said. “You may find opportunities that suit you, but you wouldn’t have considered it any other way, both within and outside of the industry you’re in.”

3. Look for companies that prioritize hiring.

Some companies prioritize recruiting more than others, according to Indeed data.

“They make recruiting effective and efficient,” Dobroski said.

This includes streamlined hiring processes with clear descriptions of open positions and transparent communication with job seekers, he said.

Indeed has published a list of the 15 companies that are currently hiring the fastest.

Here are the companies that made the list, according to ranking.
