Apple will significantly improve the design of the iPhone 16, according to a new leak

The next iPhones, the iPhone 16 series, are expected to include models with an all-new battery design. This is important for several reasons and the new report gives hope to all of us who want to keep our iPhones for longer.

The latest report echoes earlier rumors that predicted a different external material for the battery case, replacing the current foil with a metal case, according to The Information.

This could mean that the next phone could have better thermal management, and thus avoid the overheating controversy that plagued the iPhone 16 when it launched, although this was quickly resolved with a software update.

But it also brings another important change: it would mean that replacing the battery would be much easier. Currently, changing the battery is tedious, requiring careful removal of adhesive strips with tweezers, which becomes more complicated if the strip breaks during removal, requiring heat or solvent to complete the operation. Replacing the battery is also a complicated procedure.

Thanks to the new metal cased battery and the so-called electrically induced adhesive peel-off technology, by applying low electrical voltage, the battery can be removed from the chassis more easily.

A simpler and potentially cheaper battery replacement process means users can choose to keep their iPhone longer with a new battery rather than buying a new phone.

The new battery is believed to be featured in some iPhone 16 models, but perhaps not all, with the expectation that all models in the iPhone 17 lineup released in 2025 will see the new design.

Another aspect of this story is the influence of the EU, which requires user-friendly battery replacement in certain circumstances. If the cell does not reach 83% capacity after 500 full charges, or 80% after 1,000 full charges, then the phone needs greater access to facilitate replacement. Although all the latest iPhone 15 models pass the 1.00 charge test, previous phones do not.

Introducing new battery technology like this is a strong message for Apple, showing that iPhones can be more durable after all.
