THE BBC reports that Apple will change the way iPhones and other devices display notifications summarized by Apple Intelligence to make it clearer to users when its AI technology has adjusted words. Shortly after the still-in-beta feature launched in the U.K. in December, the news organization complained about how it had rewritten a headline about the UnitedHealthcare shooting suspect, falsely suggesting that the BBC had reported that Luigi Mangione had committed suicide.
Since then, according to the BBC, Apple summaries had incorrectly rewritten its app notifications to name a winner of the PDC World Darts Championship before the event even started and falsely claimed that Rafael Nadal had came out as gay. “These summaries from Apple do not reflect – and in some cases completely contradict – the original BBC content,” the outlet writes.
The BBC reports that Apple said in a statement: “A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text displayed is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. »
Apple Intelligence has had some funny moments, but there have also been some shocking failures, like summarizing a text message saying “this hike almost killed me” as a “suicide attempt.”
Apple told the BBC that receiving the summaries was optional. If you want to exercise this option, you can disable the feature or change which apps use it by going to Settings > Notifications > Summarize notifications.
