Apple produced $14 billion worth of iPhones in India in the last fiscal year, a sign of the company’s continued efforts to make more devices outside China, a Bloomberg report said Wednesday.

As relations between the United States and China have deteriorated, Apple has worked to diversify its supply chain by expanding production in countries like Vietnam and India. This is a major change for the iPhone maker, which has historically relied on China for manufacturing.

Apple now makes about 1 in 7 iPhones, or 14 percent, in India, double the amount produced there last year, according to the report. Manufacturer Pegatron assembled about 17% of these iPhones, while Foxconn produced about 67%, according to the report. Wistron built the rest.

In June 2023, Apple CEO Tim Cook and other tech executives met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House. Cook told CNBC after the meeting that India represented a “huge opportunity.” Apple opened its first retail stores in the country last year.

China remains a crucial market for Apple, but sales have gotten off to a rocky start this year. A Counterpoint Research report from March found that iPhone sales in China fell 24% in the first six weeks of 2024. The company said Apple faced significant competition from other smartphone suppliers like Huawei.

Apple declined to comment.
