Apple plans to postpone the debut of its expected virtual reality headset until late 2022 or later, according to Bloomberg.

Although Apple has never publicly confirmed work on a headset, investors and analysts increasingly believe such a device will become a major new product category for the tech giant. Apple is said to have a large team, called the Technology Development Group, working on the headset.

Apple previously planned to launch the product in 2022 at its developer conference, according to the report, but could delay it due to overheating, cameras and software issues.

The delay could dampen enthusiasm for the Metaverse, a collection of augmented and virtual reality-related technologies often publicly championed by rivals. Industry analysts expected the introduction of the Apple product to provide additional energy to the industry.

A delay could raise questions about its plan to go to market. Apple’s annual developer conference is a great place to motivate software makers to build apps for a new product.

The headset should offer a virtual reality experience with a high resolution screen. Some reports say it could potentially cost over $ 1,000, far more than current VR headsets like the $ 299 Meta Quest. It will focus on communication tools and media consumption, according to Bloomberg. A separate augmented reality product, with transparent lenses, is still years away, according to the report.

Apple tells vendors the product could sell up to 10 million units in its first year, according to Bloomberg. An Apple representative declined to comment.
