Apple finalizes deal with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to iPhone

Apple Inc. has struck a deal with OpenAI to use the startup’s technology on the iPhone, part of a broader initiative to bring artificial intelligence features to its devices, according to people familiar with the matter.

The two sides are finalizing terms of a pact to use ChatGPT features in Apple’s iOS 18, the next iPhone operating system, said the sources, who asked not to be named. identified because the situation is private. Apple has also held discussions with Alphabet Inc.’s Google about licensing that company’s Gemini chatbot. These discussions did not result in an agreement, but are continuing.

An OpenAI deal would allow Apple to offer a popular chatbot as part of a series of new AI features it plans to announce next month. Bloomberg reported in April that discussions with OpenAI had intensified. However, there is no guarantee that an agreement will be announced soon.

Representatives for Apple, OpenAI and Google declined to comment.

Apple plans to make a splash in the world of artificial intelligence this June at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. As part of the initiative, the company will run some of its upcoming artificial intelligence features through data centers equipped with its own internal processors, Bloomberg reported.

Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he personally used OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but added that there were “a number of issues that need to be resolved.” He promised that new AI features would be integrated into Apple products on a “very considered basis.”

During Apple’s earnings conference call last week, he claimed that Apple would have an advantage in AI.

“We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple’s unique combination of seamless integration of hardware, software and services,” Cook said during the earnings conference call.
