Apple brings AI transcription to Voice Memos

I often use iPhone voice memos during product briefings for interviews. As you can imagine, transcribing a 20-minute recording can be tedious. Fortunately, AppleInsider has learned about an AI-powered update for the Voice Memos and Notes apps on iPhone, which will soon be able to transcribe and summarize voice memos on your phone.

According to AppleInsider, you will soon be able to access your Notes app, which is also being redesigned, and see your recorded voice memo with the text fully transcribed. The AI summary feature will also summarize your voice memos with notes, which would be very useful for recording lectures, meetings, and panel discussions.

The feature is expected to be part of iOS 18 and will roll out in late 2024. After the release of iOS, we will soon see the feature on macOS 15 and iPadOS 18.

The area of the iPhone Voice Memos app that displays a graph of recorded audio will be replaced with a screen displaying live transcription. The Notes app will see a new speech bubble button that you can tap to view the saved transcription.

I’m curious to see how well this feature will work. Ultimately, it’s all about AI, and it’s not perfect. I don’t know if the transcription will work as well for people with different regional accents. You also need to consider things like speaking volume and room acoustics. I hope they expand the functionality to include other languages in the future.

This also reminds me of one of my critiques of the new Rabbit R1: The device would be virtually useless as soon as phones become smart enough to offer the same features (which will happen sooner than we think). The Teenage Engineering gadget promises a voice recording summary feature along the way. Still, given that Apple is already rolling it out on our phones, we wouldn’t use a dedicated device for it.
