Apple approves Epic Games Store for iOS after twice rejecting it

Apple has approved a notarization request made by the Epic Games Store after rejecting it twice.

Developers can now release software for iOS without going through Apple’s App Store, but the company still requires them to go through a notary service. According to its developer guidelines, this system “scans software for malicious content, checks for code signing issues, and quickly returns the results to you.”

On July 5, Epic announced on social media that the tech company had twice rejected the iOS version of its game store. Apple claimed there were similarities between Epic’s “Install” button and Apple’s “Get” button, in addition to the labels for in-app purchases.

Epic said it is using “the same naming conventions used in popular app stores across multiple platforms, and following standard conventions for iOS app buttons” to create “a store that mobile users can easily understand.”

“Apple’s rejection is arbitrary, obstructive and contrary to the DMA, and we have raised our concerns with the European Commission,” he added. “Unless Apple presents any further obstacles, we remain ready to launch the Epic Games Store and Fortnite on iOS in the EU in the coming months.”

Apple then informed Epic that it had accepted its notarization request. The next day, Epic said in another message that Apple “still requires that it change the UI in a future release,” which the platform holder disputes.

The Epic Games Store and Fortnite will launch this year following the approval of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which allows alternative payments and app stores on Apple devices.

Earlier this year, Epic argued that Apple violated the DMA after initially blocking its attempt to launch on iOS.

Last month, the European Commission ruled that Apple’s rules of engagement were inconsistent with the DMA because they “prevent app developers from freely directing consumers to alternative channels for offers and content.”
