CBS News journalists are impatient to point out the details of what could happen to their own workplace.
The staff of the unit staff, who are now part of Paramount Skydance, are worried about the potential of a new series of layoffs, according to three people familiar with the division of news, and are also curious of a new possible chapter for “CBS Eventing News”, which has seen its notes drop significantly since the adoption of a new atypical format.
CBS News refused to make the executives available to comment.
The layoffs are indeed possible. Skydance leaders reported earlier this month at a meeting with journalists whom they intended to follow the plans previously announced to reduce the costs of $ 2 billion in the company, which suffered from longer-term slowdowns in traditional advertising and distribution income while unique viewers adopt streaming technology. Jeff Shell, the new president of Skydance, said that these cups and discounts should be disclosed by the company’s next quarterly report to investors in November.
As for “CBS Evening News”, the leaders are about to experiment with an adjustment in current format, which is based on two anchors providing new side by side.
A person familiar with the question suggests that viewers will in coming weeks see a more frequent dependence on one of the anchors – John Dickerson and Maurice Dubois direct the program – being on the road during major events. Last week, Dickerson was on the ground in Alaska while US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met to discuss Russia’s current battle against Ukraine. The use of the two anchors in this way would put a person authority in the field and the studio, suggested this person, while giving the television news the possibility of providing news at the top of the broadcast.
This suggests a new wrinkle in the program’s mission. The original concept of this “evening” iteration has been to highlight more reporting of functionalities and businesses. In the first few weeks, even veterans of the CBS News Washington office tried to examine the effects of Trump’s policies on people in places like Baltimore or Canada. And yet, the criticisms complained that the spectacle sometimes gave a short duration to make the headlines.
The format adjustment could potentially give the “evening news” a photo of the latest titles while leaving room for the distinct elements that it brings to the mixture.
Speculations on “Svening News” have grown since the disclosure that its current executive producer, Guy Campanile, would leave the show and return to his old house, “60 minutes”, where he has long worked as a producer. One of the concepts behind the new “evening news” was to adopt part of the spirit of “60”, which generates its own headlines by pursuing stories linked to headlines and completely disconnected from them.
But the evening of the evening-News, accustomed to a format that has done well for many decades, did not bit. According to Nielsen. ABC’s “World News Tonight Tonight, which leads the category, captured on average nearly 6.89 million, while” NBC Nightly News “of NBC won almost 5.35 million.
The leaders of CBS News had hoped that their new “evenings of the evening” could recover the viewers while Tom Llamas had resumed the reins of NBC after a decision to Lester Holt to move away from the “night” role. Instead, the CBS show has lost hundreds of thousands of viewers since it has moved away from the format that had been anchored by Norah O’Donnell.
It is said that a potential candidate to take the “evening news” behind the camera would be Kim Harvey, a veteran producer who worked for CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC, with CBS News. Harvey recorded time working on MSNBC town hall during the 2016 elections race, and with anchors that go from Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes to Bill O’reilly and Greta Van Susteren.
