Anthropic’s Claude Sees Lukewarm Reception on iOS Compared to ChatGPT Debut

Consumer demand for mobile AI chatbot applications outside of ChatGPT may decline. Earlier this month, Anthropic launched its first mobile app on iOS, providing access to its Claude 3 model to free and paid users. Although the app offers the same features as its web version, as well as history sync and photo upload capabilities, it only generated a total of 157,000 global downloads in its first week on sale. . Compare that with ChatGPT, which saw 480,000 installs in the first five days of its US launch, when its app was also iOS-only.

Unlike ChatGPT, Claude did not become a new App Store hit. As the ChatGPT app has risen to the top of the App Store, becoming one of the best-performing new releases of 2023 (and the year before!), Claude’s reception has so far been much more lukewarm.

According to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, Claude’s highest rank among Apple’s top free iPhone apps in the United States was 55th on May 4, a few days after its first launch in the United States. month. As of Friday, the app no longer ranks among the best free iPhone apps in the United States. It now ranks 51st among the best free productivity apps in the United States, down from 5th in that category. also reached on May 4.

For comparison, Claude achieved 50th place in the productivity rankings seven days after its release. But seven days after ChatGPT launched, it was already #3 overall, as well as the #1 productivity app.

Claude downloads are driven by three key markets: the United States, with a 50% share of Claude installs, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom, with 11% and 8%, respectively. However, data indicates that interest in the new AI app declined sharply after Claude’s arrival, with downloads quickly dropping from five figures to four figures within a week of its launch. The decline suggests there may not be the same level of consumer demand or brand recognition around this ChatGPT rival.

To be fair, ChatGPT was launched at a time when the market was ready for an official AI companion.

Before its arrival, other third-party apps had capitalized on growing consumer interest in AI tools, calling themselves “ChatGPT” or an “AI chatbot” to trick users into believing it was was an official OpenAI product. While most of these apps were essentially polar software with expensive subscriptions to access their AI, the top apps still managed to generate millions in consumer spending before ChatGPT debuted on the App Store. The existence of the apps also contributed to ChatGPT’s brand name recognition – something Anthropic’s Claude lacks.

Claude also suffers from having more competition in the AI space than ChatGPT when it initially launched on iOS. Since then, Google has integrated AI into its suite of products, including its Assistant and iOS search app. It renamed and upgraded its own AI chatbot Bard to Gemini. Meanwhile, aggregators like Quora’s Poe allow AI enthusiasts to play with ChatGPT, Claude, and a range of other AI models in one place.
