Anthony Albanese under fire over key complaint about released asylum seeker accused of hitting pensioner at home

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has criticized Anthony Albanese over a key claim about a recently released asylum seeker accused of denigrating a grandmother.

Ms Ley spoke to the Prime Minister on Sky News on Sunday as the fallout continues following the alleged home invasion in Perth on April 16.

Ninette Simons, 73, and her husband Phillip, 76, were allegedly targeted by a trio including Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan, 43, one of 154 detainees released by the High Court.

Outrage was sparked after it was revealed an ankle monitoring bracelet had been removed from the inmate before the alleged break-in.

The Prime Minister said the decision was ultimately made by the Community Protection Board.

Revelations then emerged. Jamshidi Doukoshkan was on bail for previous offenses and questions were raised as to why the Commonwealth did not object.

The Albanian government claimed that the protection committee and the federal director of criminal prosecutions were responsible for the case.

Ms Ley disputed the allegation accusing Mr Albanese of trying to avoid accepting ownership of the huge mess.

The government has been criticized for “blaming” Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan (pictured), who allegedly attacked the couple while they were on bail.

She said she was “horrified, shocked and disgusted” by the whole ordeal.

“A woman in her 70s with cancer in Western Australia (has) her face on the front page of the WA newspaper,” she said.

“The terror she had to experience and we have a government that is handing all of this over to a community safeguarding advisory committee and even the prime minister, suggesting he is independent.”

She said Immigration Minister Andrew Giles had remained absent during the controversy despite calls for him and Home Secretary Clare O’Neil to be sacked.

“I think (Mr Giles) is letting that get in the way of a sensible, decent and humane approach when you have the regulators and the legislative tools to do something,” Ms Ley said.

Ms Simons also questioned on Thursday why the community protection committee ordered Jamshidi Doukoshkan’s ankle monitoring bracelet to be removed weeks before she was allegedly attacked.

“How did he end up in our living room, that’s what I can’t figure out?” Ms. Simons asked Mr. Giles.

“I don’t feel very safe here anymore, unfortunately no, I do my best to live here.”

Mr Albanese said the next day that the board had made “a bad decision… but they are the ones who make the decisions”.

The Prime Minister said he would not comment on “operational matters” when asked about the ankle monitoring issue.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Mr Albanese for comment.
