In a first since taking office as Prime Minister of India in 2014, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Sydney on Monday as part of the third and final leg of his three-country visit after concluding his trip in Papua New Guinea.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday that his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi is “the boss” because he gets a “rock star reception” wherever he goes, as does American singer Bruce Springsteen.
“The last time I saw anyone on that stage was Bruce Springsteen and he didn’t get the welcome Prime Minister Modi got. Prime Minister Modi is the boss,” said Anthony Albanese as he watched the crowds warmly welcome the Indian Prime Minister, who chanted slogans like ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi, Modi’.
“An absolute pleasure to connect with the Indian diaspora at the community program,” Modi said at the Sydney event attended by over 21,000 people from across Australia.
Prime Minister Modi further thanked members of the Indian Diaspora for enhancing people-to-people relations between the two nations.
In a gift to the Indian Diaspora, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the opening of a new consulate in Brisbane to meet longstanding demand from the Diaspora. India currently has three consulates in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
