Another Kansas City metro county pushes for Buc-ee’s

PECULIAR, Mo. — It turns out more than one area of the Kansas City metro is looking for a Buc-ee’s store.

The town of Peculiar, Mo., is also throwing its hat in the ring, campaigning on social media for the popular gas retailer attraction to establish a location in Cass County.

A Online music video featuring Mickey AryPeculiar City Administrator, is asking the public to complete an online survey, asking Buc-ee’s to consider Peculiar.

Ary imagines a stretch of undeveloped land near I-49 and Peculiar Way, which is near Ray-Pec High School, as an attractive location.

“As a small community, we need a larger tax base. We need tax revenue,” Ary said Tuesday.

Ary, a Texas native, said he has seen the enthusiasm shown by Buc-ee’s fans, traveling long distances to visit various locations. He also hopes tourist traffic to and from Lake of the Ozarks will attract Buc-ee’s.

“We believe Kansas City’s growth is to the south of the city. We see it. We see other communities around us experiencing economic growth. We want to take advantage of the same momentum,” Ary said.

Peculiar is home to approximately 7,000 people. FOX4 reached out to Buc-ee’s public relations office Tuesday, but our message regarding Peculiar’s potential development was not responded to.

“I think it would be great for the city and would just allow for more movement and more traffic. I think it would be great for a lot of businesses here,” said Nicole Purcell, who operates the popular Mexican restaurant Popi’s.

“I think it would be amazing. I think it would generate good revenue for the town, and I think for a lot of people it would be a good attraction,” added Lucas Bindi, a frequent visitor to Peculiar.

On Monday, economic developers from Kansas City and Kansas have confirmed that for FOX4 they are also in talks with Buc-ee’s.

Missouri already has a Buc-ee’s location in Springfield. The KCK store would be the chain’s first in Kansas.

Critics commented on social media that the area near Peculiar already has many gas stations. Ary said the difference is that Buc-ee’s does not accept 18-wheel trucks on its lots, unlike other nearby fuel retailers.

Ary also said he hoped to have a meeting or call with Buc-ee, where he could tell them about Cass County and how they could both benefit from it.
