Another day, another retailer leaves downtown San Francisco

Banana Republic has left its downtown San Francisco location – the second major closure to make headlines this week, as the exodus of major retailers from the once posh shopping district continues.
As Breitbart News reported earlier this week, the Williams-Sonoma kitchen and home furnishings store is expected to leave Union Square by next year. THE San Francisco Chronicle reported on Wednesday that Banana Republic was also leaving the region (original links):
Banana Republic has closed at Westfield San Francisco Center, the same mall where Nordstrom is also leaving.
The clothing store, which opened in 2009, is one of several stores owned by San Francisco-based parent company Gap that have closed during the pandemic. Gap is also implementing corporate layoffs affecting approximately 1,800 workers.

Dozens of retailers have closed or plan to close in the Powell Street and Union Square area, including Coco Republic, Saks Off Fifth, Uniqlo, H&M and Anthropologie. They cited declining foot traffic due to remote working and lack of tourists, online shopping and security concerns as factors.
Banana Republic isn’t leaving town entirely, but is moving its flagship Grant St. store to a smaller space, the the Chronicle added.
The closure of Nordstrom to which the the Chronicle mentioned was reported by Breitbart News last month – and was dismissed by some leftist pundits, who cast doubt on the company’s claim that local conditions had changed.
Meanwhile, San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Wednesday called on the state to bail out the city’s ailing public transportation system to save downtown from collapse. According to the Chronicle.
