Anker Nebula Capsule review: Take your TV anywhere

Finding a TV that fits into a tight space is more difficult than ever. Space is a luxury, after all. Add to that the poor audio quality of most TVs and there’s very little space and options left – or so I thought. After months of feeling locked into my old television, I decided to part with it. The game was not worth the effort. I wanted my room to look less cluttered, and the TV was a big part of the problem.

I decided to replace it with an Anker Nebula Capsule portable projector. It’s about the size of a soda can and produces a better picture than my old TV. I’ve had the projector for about a year but thought I lost it. I managed to find the Nebula capsule hidden in a box under my bed. I plugged it in, closed the blinds, and the image went from a blurry projection to a crisp, clean image. I started a video clip to test the sound and was surprised to find that it sounded even better than the old TV we had (no soundbar needed).

What we like

The Nebula projector is compact and weighs just over a kilo. You can easily take it with you when going outdoors or to watch it at a friend’s house. There’s also no need for all the cables or TV mounts. I could project the image from the projector onto different walls in my apartment. All I had to do was create a makeshift tripod by placing the projector on a stack of books or a stool. If you prefer good stability, the Nebula has a slot so you can quickly screw in a tripod if necessary. A portable projector isn’t perfect, but if it meets your needs, it can completely change the way you enjoy entertainment in your living space.

The setup process is also simple. It runs on Android OS, which offers plenty of apps and customization options. The Nebula connects easily via Wi-Fi, HDMI, Micro USB, or Bluetooth.

Nebula’s picture quality is far more impressive than you’d expect. Most of my favorite shows and movies were incredibly sharp. You can also zoom in completely; I nearly took up the entire length and width of my bedroom wall. I also like how easy it is to interact with Nebula. You can even control it with your phone if you can’t reach for a remote. The sound quality was also crisp, and the audio didn’t get muddy even when I tested the volume at higher levels.

Things to note

After installing my Nebula projector for the first time, I realized how dull the image can look on brighter days: blackout curtains are a great solution.

The Nebula’s battery life is around two and a half hours, in my experience. According to the brand, the battery lasts four hours in battery mode, up to two and a half hours in standard mode, and 30 hours in Bluetooth speaker mode. This seemed like a decent compromise for the size and portability of the device, and I felt like I could finish watching shows, YouTube, or movies without any issues. When you’re using a device this size, you expect it to make some sacrifices. I found that the positives far outweighed the negatives.

Other products to consider

Capsule 3 of the Anker Nebula

I use the Anker Nebula Capsule, but if you are looking for a portable projector with improved resolution, brightness, and Dolby Atmos sound capability, you should try the Nebula Capsule 3. However, it comes with a higher price tag.
