An angry man allegedly stole a tow truck and damaged several cars in Sunset Park Friday morning when he saw his vehicle being towed, authorities said.
The man hit several vehicles as he drove off with the tow truck, which also had his truck attached, police said.
The chaotic incident happened around 10:40 a.m. on 53rd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues as the tow truck driver attempted to impound the man’s vehicle, police said.
The man became angry and allegedly pushed the tow truck driver, got into the truck and took it for a short “joyride” to 55th Street and Third Avenue, leaving a trail of damaged cars behind him, police said.
He then abandoned the truck at 55th Street and Third Avenue and fled on foot, police said.
Video footage shared by News12 shows the man getting into a fighting stance as the tow truck driver backs away defensively.
The truck is then seen driving down the street as the front door of the man’s car opens, hits several cars and finally stops in front of a city bus.
Giro, a man whose car was badly damaged in the fight, said he couldn’t afford the repairs and was hoping police would catch him, News12 reported.
“I have to call the insurance or the police, I need this car, I need it to take my driver to school,” Giro said.
Police are currently searching for the man.
