Ange Postecoglou on ‘thin ice’ at Tottenham after ‘unacceptable’ defeat

After Tottenham lost to Arsenal in the first north London derby of the season in September, Postecoglou defiantly declared that he “still wins a trophy” in his second season.

These were comments aimed at allaying fans’ fears of a trophyless season, but instead they have been accustomed – as Postecoglou himself said – to mocking him after a poor result .

Silverware remains on the cards with Tottenham in the Europa League and holding a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

But Postecoglou knows that results must improve soon.

He added: “Of course, the defeats hurt me. It’s not acceptable. Too many defeats this year. Too many games are slipping away from us.

“This has to stop.”

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes the pressure is mounting on Postecoglou, saying his style of play is proving costly at times as they continue to play a high pressing game.

“Tottenham took so many risks and Arsenal took advantage. The game was so open,” Keown said on TNT Sports.

“Manchester United will probably overtake Spurs. It’s a difficult time for them and the manager is skating on ice.”

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon added: “One win in nine is not enough at all.

“It’s creating a lot of trouble in this (Tottenham) camp. If they weren’t in the Carabao Cup semi-final there would be big problems.”

Son said players also need to stand up and be counted.

“It also depends on the players,” said the striker. We have to listen to what we want to do. I think we weren’t disciplined enough.

“We need to do better in all areas. When you look at the picture, it’s not enough.”

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand criticized Tottenham’s defense, saying: “It’s like watching an academy under-18s game when the kids are taking care of it themselves.

“I would shout at my goalkeeper, my defenders. Play in front of the press, not in the press.”
