Andrew Flintoff promises something ‘really special’ as he lands new job

Andrew Flintoff has been chosen as the new head coach of the England Lions cricket team.

The 46-year-old, a former captain of his country and winner of the Ashes in 2005, has recently been working with the white-ball team.

Flintoff coached the Northampton Superchargers men’s team at The Hundred and is with the England Test team for their final match of the series against Sri Lanka.

Ahead of his upcoming winter tours in South Africa and Australia, ‘Freddie’ will begin work in his new role in October.

“I am extremely excited to take on this role with the England Lions,” he said. “It is a fantastic opportunity to work with some of the best up-and-coming talent in the country and help shape the future of the men’s game.

“The Lions program has always been a vital stepping stone for players aspiring to international success, and I am honored to be a part of that journey.

“Andrew has distinguished himself through his inspiring leadership, coaching expertise and deep understanding of the game.

“His vision aligns closely with the style of play and identity that has been fostered by the England men’s team under the leadership of Brendon McCullum and this appointment contributes to a truly exciting outlook for the future of English cricket.

“The England Lions programme is a cornerstone of our cricket structure, playing a vital role in developing the next generation of talent.

“With Andrew’s guidance, the most promising players will continue to develop, flourish and take their game to new levels. I am confident his influence will resonate throughout English cricket, helping to drive the game forward.”

Flintoff played for England from 1998 to 2009, playing 79 Tests and becoming one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket of all time.

After retiring, he moved into television presenting, including on the BBC’s hit show Top Gear.

However, he suffered serious facial and rib injuries in an accident that saw his car flip over during filming in 2022.

Flintoff was first pictured since then in September when he attended the opening match of England’s one-day international series against New Zealand.
