An air and sea search for a missing diver has been called off – days after tributes were paid to a 20-year-old woman who also went missing off the south coast.

The air and sea search was suspended after 24 hours of searching for the missing person.

The alarm was raised yesterday/Saturday at lunchtime and the search by rescuers and coastguards continued until 11pm.

On Sunday, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed that the search had ended at 11pm on Saturday evening.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the RNLI confirmed that all resources were stopped on Saturday evening after finding no trace of the diver.

The RNLI lifeboat association also said all assets had been removed.

Lifeboats from Hastings, Eastbourne and Dungeness joined the search, along with a coastguard helicopter, a fixed-wing aircraft and other vessels in the area.

Police have not released details about the Sussex diver.

The missing diver is the second to disappear off the south coast in just a few days.

Despite a massive search involving coastguards, helicopters, more than 30 lifeboats and police, no trace of her has been found.

A statement from her family said: “We are heartbroken by the loss of Emily, but we are eternally grateful for the 20 wonderful years we had with her, and we find comfort in the fact that she was doing something she loved.

“Emily was unique, spirited, outgoing, loving and loyal. She lit up every room. Emily loved the ocean and loved sailing and diving.

“She was looking forward to an exciting career in marine conservation.”
