Amy Schumer opened up about her Cushing’s syndrome diagnosis and shared that she wouldn’t have even known if it wasn’t for internet trolls.
On the January 22 episode of Call her daddyAmy spoke out about commenters criticizing her suddenly swollen face. “A year ago, the Internet really came for me,” she told host Alex Cooper.
“I was like, ‘Okay, everyone, relax,'” she said at first, but changed her mind when she saw doctors expressing concern in her comments. . “Doctors were chiming in in the comments and saying, ‘No, no… something is seriously wrong. Your face looks so crazy.'”
They suggested she might have Cushing’s syndrome. According to the National Institute of Health, Cushing’s disease occurs when the body “produces too much cortisol, the stress hormone, over a long period of time.” Symptoms include weight gain, increased fat around the neck, and a round face called “moon face.” If left untreated, people with this condition can suffer from a stroke or heart attack, as well as several other health complications.
“At first I was like, ‘Fuck you,'” she continued. However, she remembered that she also received steroid injections for her breast reduction and C-section scars. “So I had this, I had these steroid injections, and it gave me this thing called Cushing’s syndrome – which I wouldn’t have known about if the internet hadn’t been so hard on me.”
She added that she received her official diagnosis in early 2024, just before filming her next film. A little pregnant. “I found out that I had this condition and that I had what’s called moon face, and I’m acting in a movie – and there’s a camera right in front of my face,” she said. declared.
“Everyone says, ‘You look great,'” she said, until a friend finally was honest with her and said, “Your face looks a little crazy.”
Amy added that she “got rid of” her Cushing’s and said “it just had to sort itself out.”
And luckily, Amy had someone on set who could highlight her during those insecure moments. “I was feeling really depressed before I started shooting this movie. … I was really struggling to figure out how I was going to act in a movie while it was happening,” she said.
