Amitabh Bachchan seeks protection of his personality rights, says ‘he’s going on for a while’

The court order follows a lawsuit filed by the veteran actor alleging exploitation of his ‘celebrity publicity rights’ by several individuals, including the people behind a ‘KBC lottery’ .

Bollywood legend and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court on Friday seeking protection of his name, image, voice and personality attributes.

Prominent lawyer Harish Salve appeared for the actor. “I want to show the crass way…and show what made him come to court. It’s been going on for a while,” Salve said.

The case was heard by Judge Navin Chawla, who barred the general public from infringing on the actor’s personality and publicity rights.

“It is undeniable that Amitabh Bachchan is a popular personality and is also portrayed in many advertisements. He is harmed by the defendants who used his attributed personality to promote their own businesses, goods and services, without his permission,” the official said. “The actor is likely to suffer irreparable loss and harm. Some of the activities may even discredit him. In view of the foregoing, an interim ex parte ad order is issued,” the order continues.

The court also directed telecommunications service providers on the issue raised in the lawsuit. Salve cited examples of sweepstakes, video calls quoting the actor, t-shirts and posters bearing his name, and a website bearing the actor’s name.
