The Americans want to know how much the trade war of President Donald Trump increases prices.
The White House castigated Amazonia when it has been reported that the online retailer could display the cost of prices alongside individual products. (Amazon then denied the report, but a storm of fire had already started.)
“This is a hostile and political act of Amazon,” said the press secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, in response to the report.
According to the latest Economist / Yougov survey, the majority of Americans want this type of price transparency. The survey revealed that 61% of American adults agree that companies “should display the amount of purchase price to pay prices”.
On the other hand, 80% of Democrats, 61% of the self -employed and 42% of Republicans agreed that companies should display transparency in prices of prices.
The leaders of large companies, including Walmart, Mattel, Conagra and Best Buy, said they could increase prices in response to Trump’s “Liberation Day” prices. Economists expect cars, food, toys and other products to become more expensive.
Sometimes Trump and the White House said that temporary price increases were part of the pain necessary for a trade policy that returns more manufacturing to the United States. The president said that children have too many toys and should be satisfied with “two dolls instead of 30 dolls”.
Trump said the United States approached trade agreements with some countries. Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Congress that talks did not even start with China. The United States imposed a rate of 145% on Chinese products. Beijing said he would host discussions, but is also ready to support a long trade war if necessary.
Meanwhile, Trump’s approval rating has taken an important blow. Surveys also show that Americans have also embellished on its management of the economy.
The Economist-Yougov survey revealed that Trump had a net percentage point approval of -10, which is greater than the weighted average of Nate Silver (-7.3) and the average of Realclearpolitics (-5.9).
If the political situation does not improve, the Republicans could face an attack in the mid-term elections of 2026.
The Economist-Yougov survey interviewed 1850 respondents selected in the Opt-in yougov panel from May 2 to May 5. Respondents are American citizens aged 18 and over. Their responses were weighted by several factors, including sex, age, race, education and the rate of electoral participation and the vote in 2024.
