Americans Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh finish 1-2 in 100m butterfly at Paris Olympics
The U.S. team was atop the order in the women’s 100-meter butterfly final on Sunday at the Paris Olympics.
Torri Huske won her first career Olympic gold medal with a narrow victory over Gretchen Walsh as the Americans finished 1-2 in the event. Walsh had to settle for the second silver of her Olympic career.

Huske touched the wall in 55.59 seconds and Walsh in 55.63 seconds. China’s Zhang Yufei won the bronze medal.
Huske and Walsh were the favorites heading into the event, but the United States hadn’t won a medal in the event since the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where Dana Vollmer won bronze. Vollmer was also the last American to win gold in the event, winning in 2012 in London.
Huske had the third fastest heat with a time of 56.72 seconds and finished second in the semifinals in 56 seconds flat.

Walsh set an Olympic record in the semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds. Walsh also holds the world record in the event, set in June at the U.S. Olympic trials.
With Huske’s gold medal, the United States maintained its lead in the standings with nine medals. But the United States only won two gold medals during the event.

The U.S. men’s swimming team won gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay on Saturday.
