Americans are (still) depressed about the economy

After a burst of optimism, Americans are feeling a little more pessimistic about the economy — again.

Consumer confidence, a gauge of Americans’ economic perceptions, is at its lowest level in six months, according to a closely watched index by the University of Michigan. This measure recorded its biggest decline since 2021, reflecting the persistent strong inflationary pressure on household budgets and fueling fears of worsening price rises, unemployment and interest rates in the coming months.
