Alex Morgan, one of the world’s most prolific goalscorers and best-known soccer stars, announced his retirement from professional soccer on Thursday.
Morgan, a 35-year-old forward for the NWSL’s San Diego Wave, posted an emotional video more than four minutes long on social media to declare her final game this weekend against the North Carolina Courage.
Morgan also revealed that she was pregnant with her second child during the video.
“Football has been a part of me for 30 years. It’s one of the first things I loved and I gave everything to the game. What I got back is more than I could have dreamed of,” Morgan said.
A member of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), Morgan is a two-time World Cup champion and won an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
“We are changing lives and the impact we are having on the next generation is irreversible, and I am proud to have helped move the game forward and leave it in a place that I am so happy and proud of,” she said.
She scored 123 goals for the United States, ranking fifth on the USWNT’s all-time list.
“Charlie (Morgan’s daughter) came to me the other day and said that when she grew up she wanted to be a footballer and that made me immensely proud, not because I want her to be a footballer when she grows up, but because there is a path that even a four-year-old can see now,” Morgan said.
