American Airlines adds Google Wallet support for boarding passes

American Airlines just announced that it will support Google Wallet with its boarding passes, a long-awaited addition for the major airline.

Google Wallet supported flight boarding passes before it was even called Google Wallet. Still, some airlines essentially ignored Google’s offering, even though they supported Apple Wallet. One of these airlines was American, but that is changing today.

In a press release, American Airlines announced that it will finally offer support for Google Wallet.

The airline says:

Customers using Google Wallet will now be able to add their boarding pass to their Google Wallet for easy access during their travel day. To make the travel day even smoother, customers will also receive flight updates when they add their boarding pass to Google Wallet.

Before this, Google Wallet addressed the lack of support by allowing travelers to take a screenshot of their boarding pass and add it to Wallet, but this didn’t always include deeper integration such as flight updates.

This also comes as American is further improving support for Apple Wallet with the ability to automatically add the pass to Wallet when checking in through the US app. The broader press release in which this was announced focused primarily on “reimagining the customer experience” with new AI tools for finding flight routes as well as 3D maps showing the interiors of certain aircraft.
