AMD Ryzen 9 9950X delivers 20% performance gain in Blender over Ryzen 9 7950X at 230W

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X tested in Blender with five power settings

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X delivers 20% performance gain in Blender over Ryzen 9 7950X at 230W

AnandTech forum user “Igor_Kavinski” claims to have access to the Ryzen 9 9950X, an upcoming desktop processor based on the Zen 5 architecture, slated to launch later this month. The sample in Igor’s possession is an engineering unit, which may differ from the final commercial version. Engineering samples often have lower clock speeds, especially months before official release, but this particular unit appears to be running at or above expected levels, with no apparent clock speed or power limitations.

Igor shared some data, mainly focused on the Blender benchmark, a processor-demanding 3D rendering test similar to Cinebench. The test system was equipped with Precision Boost Overdrive, water cooling, and a 230W PPT (Package Power Tracking).

The processor was able to reach 5.62 GHz, which, while impressive, is still lower than AMD’s official turbo frequency for the Ryzen 9 9950X (5.7 GHz). This could be due to potential limitations of the engineering sample. It is worth noting, however, that despite the high power, the temperature never exceeded 62 degrees Celsius.

Another forum user contributed benchmarks for the Ryzen 9 7950X at similar PPT levels. Overall, the Ryzen 9 9950X appears to show about a 20% improvement over the 7950X at 230W. The performance gap narrows at lower power settings, however:

The AMD Ryzen 9000 series is expected to launch on July 31st. While AMD hasn’t officially confirmed the release date or price, rumors suggest that the price could be close to that of the Ryzen 9 7950X at launch, perhaps a bit lower. Proper samples have already been distributed to the press, and AMD is reportedly sending stock to retailers and distributors. We may see new test results from these sources soon.
