Amal Clooney can convince me to wear Nothing. And that’s because she always looks like the personification of perfection. That hair! That skin! That smile! Those outfits! So it’s not like it’s hard for her to persuade me to try something new. In fact, she recently wore a pair of shoes that I didn’t like until I saw her in them – I guess it’s the Clooney effect, and I guess I’ll have to try her divisive shoes while I still can.
Clooney has been busy serving up style in Italy (oh, how I wish I could go back there right now), but there’s no denying that this particular look is a ray of sunshine, literally. The human rights lawyer stepped out in a bright yellow minidress that couldn’t help but smile. In fact, if you’re having a bad day, like me, just watch it for a serotonin boost.
But the impertinence But it didn’t stop there. Clooney paired her sunny dress with a summery straw hat, sunglasses, and finally, a pair of platform shoes, a style of shoe I never thought I’d wear, since I love stilettos and the like. But Clooney is a fan of platform shoes (she wore them here too!), so I guess it’s about time I finally gave them a try.
While I won’t be giving up my stiletto heels, a shoe I’ve waxed poetic about before, I do understand the appeal of wedges—which is to say, why Clooney seems to be rocking them on a regular basis. The style screams summer, especially when it comes to a raffia-cord sole that exudes beach-ready ease (like her pair, which she paired with an equally summery mini skirt). But the wedge doesn’t stop there: The heel iteration can be crafted in cork, another Clooney-worshipped option, or patent leather, like these Larroudés I’ve got my eye on for fall, which I plan on wearing with cute socks, too!
Although wedges certainly generate some controversy, as they can immediately evoke New Jersey Shore or at the height of the Y2K, their comfort and practicality are undeniable. So put that hate aside and give them a try, because if there’s one thing we’ve learned in 2024, it’s that shoes that hurt your feet simply aren’t worth it (hence the emergence of even more controversial styles that promise the height of a heel with the comfort of a sneaker). Wedges provide a balanced sole to walk on, distributing weight evenly and allowing your entire foot to not have to stand on a single 1-inch heel (scary!)
So don’t think that wedge season is over. Buy a pair now, wear them with a Clooney mini skirt while you can, and when it gets too cold, throw on some socks and rock another controversial look: socks with sandals.
