Novak Djokovic has talked about the evolution of times in tennis, saying how special the last 20 years have been and how the young Carlos Alcaraz is now under the spotlight. Djokovic explained how he and others like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have had incredible victory sequences during their play days, qualifying their rare achievements.
Djokovic said his best tennis had occurred between 23 and 33 years old, and he feels that Alcaraz is already reaching impressive levels even if he is not yet 23 years old. He also talked about the reason why he is still in competition on the tour.
“It is not something that is common, it happened once every five seasons or something. Yes, there was a domination, obviously, of Rafa on Clay, or Roger on Grass, me on a hard ground. Say, 23 and 33 is when it really happened.
“We must remember that his age and what he has done for his age is not as normal,” said Djokovic. “I am sure that we will see a lot of him on the big stage with trophies in the future, whatever, 10 years old, 15, as long as he plays,” he added.
Djokovic plans to continue
Djokovic admitted that things change especially after Federer and Nadal withdrew from sport. Djokovic noted the change of attention to the young generation, adding that it takes time to fans to adapt to this change. But Djokovic said he was not yet ready to leave the game. He shared that he was motivated to represent older players and keep fans interested in tennis.
“I mean, the competition is still there. I think each generation has its different competition. It is difficult to compare the eras. The last 20 years have been mainly dominated by us four. Obviously, when the three of my biggest competitors have retired, you can feel that there is a change,” said Djokovic.
“I suppose that it takes a little time to people to accept the fact that Roger and Rafa do not play, and Murray, and I suppose that one day myself, but I always try to stay there and represent the older guys, the older generation. I hope it will bring a positive effect to the tournaments and the tour itself,” he explained.
“It is also one of the reasons why I continue to play, it is because I have the impression that it also helps tennis to prosper on attention and the crowd that arrives and looks at tournaments and take an interest. If you really see the figures for participation in recent years.
“It should be, it should, sport should survive everyone, sport will survive everyone, and sport is more important than anyone individually. So we are all here at the service of a sport too. ”
