The Polish elections, held on June 1, led to Karol Nawrocki Conservative who beats the liberal mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski by a very narrow margin. Nawrocki won 50.89% of the vote against the 49.11% of Trzaskowki. Polish politicians, namely the Trzaskowski camp, asked that the results be surveyed.

The chief among those who express concerns are the chief of staff to Rafał Trzaskowski, Wiola Paprocka, who wrote on the surprising reversal of support for the second round of the presidential election in certain commissions.

“We will contact the PKW (National Electoral Commission) to clarify each of these cases,” announced Paprocka on Twitter. His declaration included four polling stations in which irregularity reports were revealed.

Due to alleged irregularities, Paprocka appealed for electoral demonstrations to be deposited with the Supreme Court.

In a resort in the city of Krakow, Trzaskowski won the first round of elections, winning with 550 votes. Nawrocki, on the other hand, came in third place, after the Major of Warsaw and the hard candidate on the right Sławomir Mentzen. In runoff, however, Nawrocki obtained the most votes, according to the official count, which aroused questions about the results of the count.

An investigation into the case is carried out by the district electoral commission in Krakow. The president of the Krakow municipal council, Jakub Kosek, wrote in an article on social networks that the votes had been incorrectly included in the minutes.

“From what we know today, an error was made in the minutes – and the results of the candidates were exchanged,” said Kosek.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said he was surprised by such “errors”. “I count on this to be clarified, because by looking at the results myself,” he said.

“We have never had such cases in the past,” he added.

Protest the results

The National Electoral Commission (PKW) addressed the question in separation. Responding to a request for comments in Euronews, PKW representatives said that any irregularity should be reported to the Supreme Court of Poland by June 16.

“Currently, the results of the district vote can only be verified by the Supreme Court in the context of the examination of electoral demonstrations,” they told Euronews.

“ For seriously a matter to brush it ”

A spokesperson for the Polish peasants’ party (which is currently part of the Donald Tusk’s power coalition) and a long-standing member of the electoral commissions, Miłosz Motyka, underlined in an interview with Euronews that the questions of irregularities in the statement of votes should be carefully verified.

“There should not be a situation where, having several members of the electoral commission of various political parties, municipalities, town halls, we have a situation where a result which affects the end result (election-ed.) Is wrongly in the minutes,” he said.

“This is too serious a question to simply rule out. This is why one of this information should be verified and the PKW should also carry out appropriate procedures with the chairman of the committee. The goal here is really to check the irregularities,” he added.

Law and justice: “It is to create a myth of victory that was to be carried away”

Law and Justice deputy Radosław Fogiel, underlined in an interview with Euronews that this is a standard procedure to investigate irregularities. However, he stressed that he criticized the actions of certain members of the ruling coalition.

“Here, unfortunately, we are starting to face an organized action and the creation of an entire account of alleged falsification,” he said, adding that “the middle of the civic platform” is “to formulate this type of theses and it is a serious and dangerous question”.

“If I had to guess why someone would do this, assuming that there is a method in this madness and that it is not only the result of political paranoia, I would say that it is to serve the goal of creating a myth on the victory that was to be claimed,” Fogiel told Euronews.

The Osce mission takes stock of the elections

The observers representing the joint mission of the OSCE office for democratic institutions and human rights and the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe declared in a statement that the elections had been carried out “professionally and effectively”. In their opinion, freedom of expression, the association and the peaceful assembly were respected in the two cycles. However, they drew attention to media biases as well as irregularities in the financing of campaigns.

Karol Nawrocki won the second round of the presidential election by a difference of 369,451 votes, or 1.19 percentage points. This is the smallest difference in voting between candidates since 1990.
