“ All the boys are not blue ” at the top of the list of the most difficult books in the ALA in 2024: NPR

According to the American Library Association, organized groups are behind censorship books in libraries.

Memory of George Mr. Johnson Not all boys are blue has been the target of the challenges of the book for years. According to a new report by the American Library Association (ALA), it was the most challenged book of 2024.

The ALA defines a challenge as “an attempt to withdraw or restrict the documents, depending on the objections of a person or a group”. Other frequently disputed books include Maia Kobabe Gender queerToni Morrison The most blue eye And Stephen Chbosky The perks of Being a Wallflower.

According to the report, there were 821 attempts to censor library books in all types of library in 2024. This is down compared to the previous year, although the third largest number of challenges of books recorded by ALA. The report also noted that 72% of the requests for censorship of books in school and public libraries came from “pressure groups, elected officials, members of the board of directors and administrators” compared to the 16% from parents.

The majority of the disputed titles concerned Queer or people of color.

“We are witnessing an effort to eliminate whole genres and categories of library shelves books in search of a broader objective of placing politics and religion on the well-being and education of young people and everyone’s right to access and find information in our libraries,” wrote Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the ALA office for intellectual freedom.

The report comes a week after President Trump has moved to dismantle the Museum and Library Services Institute (IMLS), placing its entire staff on administrative leave. The IMLS is the Federal Agency which grants subsidies to libraries and museums across the country. On Friday 21 on Friday 21, the general prosecutors filed a complaint against President Trump to prevent him from closing three federal agencies, including the Imls.
