Alexandra Daddario is on board with this polarizing summer shoe

One important thing to have when it comes to fashion is to have an open mind. Many trends can cause raised eyebrows (hey, I tried a few, only to realize, oh, this is really good). And while it’s obvious that not all clothing “things” suit everyone, there is one shoe style that’s really blowing up, and I think it’s 100% worth a try before you buy it. ‘discard.

Summer is all about going out (duh!), but this season, people are taking things to a whole new level of total exposure with the ever-popular mesh shoe trend — and Alexandra Daddario is the latest celebrity to hop on board this style. The actress, who attended the F1 Grand Prix in Monaco this weekend, looked like summer incarnate in a quintessential sundress covered in a poppy-yellow rose print. How romantic! The midi had a fitted waist that flared out into a mid-length A-line skirt, perfect for showing off your shoes, especially if they’re as eye-catching (or invisible?) as Daddario’s. She was wearing clear flats that you might have to squint to see, and before she said, “Hmmm, transparent flat shoes, Eva? look at.

Daddario wore mesh ballet flats with a black stitched upper that gave them a bit of contour. Without these contrasting details, we might have thought she was going out barefoot in Monaco. But alas, she didn’t, even though she might have wanted you to believe that.

Daddario’s mesh flats were a soft pink color that made them even more invisible, but if you think about it, the rise of this mesh or mesh ballet flat is a clear successor to the PVC trend that’s making a splash in the fashion world for years. Said Cinderella slipper has been worn by Amal Clooney, Jennifer Lopez and Hailey Bieber, but unlike the style typically made from PVC plastic, the mesh shoe is more flexible, as it’s made from mesh that actually moves with you. Not to mention, it’s also more breathable, making it a must-have shoe for summer.

Sheer ballet flats come in a range of transparencies, from mesh styles like this one that are slightly less invisible to near-naked options that will make people do a double take. The good news is that whichever pair you choose, the style options are endless, as they pair well with jeans, dresses, Bermuda shorts and midi skirts. The tricky part, though, will be remembering that you’re actually wearing shoes, because when you look down you might think you forgot to wear a pair.
