BOSTON – The introduction of Kristian Campbell to the major leagues is largely on the second goal, except for some cameos in the left field during training in the spring and the first week of the regular season. Now the Red Sox plan to test its versatility even more.
Manager Alex Cora said on Saturday that Campbell, in a new development, would play the central ground – and not the left field – the days when he will not start to the second goal for the moment. The Red Sox modified their original range, which had Campbell in the left field and Jarren Duran in the center, to install Campbell in the central field and Duran on the left. Cora said that it was like the SOX would line up on certain days when David Hamilton plays the second goal and Campbell moves to the outside field.
Campbell, who played four positions through three levels of a minor league in 2024, never adapted in the left field to High-A, Double-A or Triple-A. But he saw 25 action games – and 204 rounds – in the center.
“We are going to play (Campbell) in the center,” said Cora. “Just looking at Jarren to play on the left yesterday, he is a monster there. It is really good. Campbell played a lot of central field last year, more than 20 games. He’s comfortable with that. I don’t know why during spring training, we had this crazy idea to play him in the left field when he played in the center last year.
“I just thought about it yesterday after the match. You start spending time in the office to relax. I said to myself, “What are we doing?” He plays in the center, so why are we trying to do this in one of the strangest left fields of the game? He said the central field.
Cora has cited several reasons for the switch. Campbell’s comfort in the center is a large one, especially given the wobbly nature of Fenway Park, where Duran has become a strong defender in front of the green monster in recent years. Giving Duran the possibility of playing in one place after having bounced back on the outside in recent years, helping him to be consistent – and will help a potential candidacy on the Golden Gloves. The most important reason, however, according to Cora, is to find a way to obtain the Speedy Hamilton in alignment to the second goal against right -handed launchers. Boston wants Campbell to play every day and, therefore, Rafaela, who left 3 against 26 in marble, will sometimes be the strange man. Other modifications are expected when the best exterior prospects Roman Anthony go up to the majors in the near future.
“We have to be Hammy in the programming,” said Cora. “We need to. I think this is the most important thing here. He’s a good player, he’s a good defender, a good offensive player. We must keep him hired.
“We cannot forget it. It is important for us. It has an impact on the game like no one on the basic paths, it has had an excellent spring and we have to kicks for him.”
Cora previously said that the club planned to get Hamilton, who could play the two positions from the middle in the inner field, certain rehearsals in the central field during spring training. This is no longer an option now, said the director.
Most of the time, Campbell will play second with Duran, Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu lined up on the grass. But there are times when, perhaps using the best offensive program of SOX, it will be Campbell traveling the middle of the outside field. Thus, nine games in his big league career, on what should be a rainy day in Fenway, Campbell will try to tackle a different third position.
“Right now, Kristian is our second base player and he will probably play the outside field once a week,” said Cora. “I think it’s much easier for him to play in the central field than the left field.”
