Alec Baldwin hands over phone to authorities investigating ‘Rust’ shooting

Alec Baldwin voluntarily handed over his cellphone to authorities investigating the shooting death of a cinematographer on the set of “Rust” in October.

Aaron Dyer, Baldwin’s civil attorney, said the actor turned him over Friday morning, but warned he would not provide an answer to investigators.

“Alec voluntarily provided his phone to the authorities this morning so they could complete their investigation. But this case does not involve his phone, and there is no answer on his phone. Alec did nothing wrong “Dyer said in a statement.

“Clearly he was told it was a cold gun and was following instructions when this tragic accident happened. The real question that needs to be answered is how the live ammunition arrived on the set first.”

The Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Sheriff’s Department had issued a warrant for Baldwin’s phone on December 16. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said investigators are looking to “obtain any material” from the actor’s phone that may relate to the shooting.

Authorities have been investigating the incident since mid-October, when a gun Baldwin was training with exploded, killing Halyna Hutchins, 42, and injuring director Joel Souza, 48.

Baldwin said in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in early December that he was working with Hutchins on how best to position the gun for the camera. He said he pulled the hammer back and released it when the gun fired.

He said he was told the gun was empty.

“The best way, the only way, to honor the death of Halyna Hutchins is to find out the truth,” Baldwin said. “This is what I am working towards, I insist, I demand that the organizations involved in this investigation do everything in their power, everything in their power, to find out what really happened. . It’s all that matters.”

Production on “Rust” was halted after filming.
