Air Canada plans to resume flights Sunday after the Canadian Industrial Relations (CIRB) council acted on a directive of the Patty Hajdu country minister to end a cabin crew strike which caused the suspension of around 700 daily flights.
The CIRB ordered Air Canada to resume operations and for all Air Canada and Air Canada on -board agents to return to their functions before 2 p.m. HE (6 p.m. GMT), the airline said in a statement.
The directive intervened after the government moved on Saturday to end the strike and demand binding arbitration to break a dead end of contract, an action that the largest carrier in the country had sought but opposed on -board agents.
Thousands of Air Canada cabin crew left the job on Saturday for the first time since 1985, after months of negotiations on a new contract. In anticipation of the judgment, the airline began to cancel flights on Friday, forcing more than 100,000 travelers to rush for alternatives or stay there.
Air Canada said the flights would restart Sunday evening, but some would still be canceled over the next seven to 10 days when the calendar stabilizes and returns to normal.
