We spoke with Hao Su, Ph.D., an associate professor at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also the director of the Biomechatronics and Intelligent Robotics Laboratory (BALLPOINT PEN)and he told us: “While the price of the exoskeleton is around $50,000 to $120,000 due to R&D and actuator costs, our approach can significantly reduce R&D costs by leveraging our efficient simulation learning framework, which enables rapid design and testing in computer simulations rather than intensive testing on physical humans and robots.

“In the future, we plan to make our robots truly affordable and accessible through innovative hardware design, namely low-ratio gears and low-cost but high-torque electric motors. In about a year, we hope to manufacture our exoskeletons for sale at a price point between $1,500 and $4,000, depending on specific features and manufacturing scale.”
