Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed for the first time India’s desire to welcome the 2036 Olympic Games in October 2023 during the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) held in Mumbai. Addressing the members of the IOC, Modi underlined the preparation and commitment of India to bring the Olympic Games to the country for the first time.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has already submitted “the expression of interest” to the future host commission of the IOC. The IOC is expected to finalize the host city by 2026 or 2027, following an assessment of all the offers.

The newly elected president of the IOC, Kirsty Coventry, recently said about India’s offer: “In the end, there is a process in place and this process is underway and which will remain, as far as I know, for the coming months.”
