The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has taken a strict measure against the India boxing federation (BFI), forming an ad hoc committee of five members to supervise its operations. This decision comes in response to BFI’s failure to lead its elections in time. The BFI denounced the decision of the IOA as “illegal” and announced its intention to file a request before the High Court of Delhi for the order to be canceled.
According to the president of the IOA, PT USHA, the BFI was supposed to organize elections by February 2, 2025. However, without election, the IOA intervened to approach what it described as “administrative instability” within the federation. The newly appointed committee, led by the former treasurer of the athletics athletics federation (AFI), Madhukant Pathak, was responsible for organizing the elections as soon as possible and ensuring the sweetness of the administration of Indian boxing.
“IOA has closely monitored the administrative affairs of the India boxing federation. In accordance with governing standards, the elections in BFI were to be carried out no later than February 2, 2025. Despite the prescribed calendar, the elections did not take place, leading to administrative instability within the Federation, “wrote the president of IOA PT USHA in an office order.
The ad hoc committee also includes Rajesh Bhandari (vice-president), DP Bhatt, Boxer Shiva Thapa and Virera Singh Thakur. The panel will oversee daily operations while facilitating the participation of athletes in international competitions.
The Boxing Federation of India was quick to condemn this decision, calling it “illegal” and a direct violation of the autonomy of a National Sports Federation (NSF). The BFI announced its intention to challenge the IOA order before the High Court of Delhi.
“The BFI firmly condemns the creation of an ad hoc panel to manage its affairs, the unletegic caller and a blatant attempt to violate the autonomy of a National Sports Federation (NSF). This was also communicated in a letter from the president, BFI to the president, Ioa, “the BFI said in a statement.
The IOA’s decision to intervene in BFI’s affairs comes after a similar decision against the India Federation (WFI) in 2023. The IOA itself remains a divided organization, with factions within the Executive Committee often in disagreement with President PT USHA on various questions.
