After President Trump signed a storm of executive orders, many aimed at his country, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum put on a show of her own Tuesday morning.
“It’s important to always keep a cool head,” she told reporters at a news conference.
Sheinbaum said Mexico would support its nationals in the United States, calling them “heroes and heroines of the nation.” She said the country would act within the framework of the Mexican Constitution and laws. And she sent a message to those watching: “Let them know that the president of the republic will always defend Mexico, above all.”
Ms. Sheinbaum then presented the five executive orders announced by Mr. Trump on Monday and directly involving Mexico, addressing each of them.
“This has happened before — it’s not something new,” Ms. Sheinbaum said, referring to Mr. Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in 2019 to release federal funds to build a border wall.
