After six days, a North Bend zebra was finally rounded up, but the method is being questioned by locals.

A zebra that has been loose in the woods near Snoqualmie and North Bend since Sunday has finally been captured, but residents are questioning the methods used to capture it.

Last weekend, four zebras escaped from a trailer east of Seattle, and three of them were quickly recaptured.

The fourth, a mare named Shug, evaded capture for nearly a week.

The zebras were being transported from Washington to Montana when the driver stopped her trailer to secure it when the zebras broke loose and ran into a nearby neighborhood.

King County officials closed trail access points along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail in Boxley Creek Natural Area on Friday and discouraged hikers and dog walkers from using those areas as they worked to secure the animal.

In a release from King County Regional Animal Services, the mare was safely captured and will be transported to Montana. Private citizens accompanied by animal control officers worked to complete the rescue Friday evening.

The zebra appeared to be in good condition, according to RASKC.

Additionally, Friday evening, KIRO 7 News received a phone call from Susan Burk of North Bend, who was working with Dallas Clark, on behalf of the zebra’s owner to facilitate the zebra’s capture.

In a statement, Burk and Clark say the following happened:

This evening we were informed that there was a group of trucks with horse trailers parked near where the zebra was seen. These vehicles had stickers reading “Zebra Roundup Crew” with sponsorship from Inspire Homes.

The group’s leaders, David and Julie Danton, owners of Embrace Horsemanship and Inspire, were on hand at the original property where the first 3 zebras were captured. Julie Danton was evicted from the property that day and David was informed that he was not welcome on the property either.

When we approached the group to let them know we were handling the zebra rescue, Julie said they were working with the vet, the sheriff’s office and the owner.

We confirmed that the vet who came for the first rescue, an equine specialist with experience working with zebras in Africa, who worked with us, had not been engaged with them.

The sheriff’s office confirmed they were not involved and would not come to the scene unless the group was trespassing on private property.

The owner of the property where we work confirmed that they were not welcome.

Once I was able to reach the zebra’s owner, she confirmed that she wanted us to continue our work where we were and that she had hired them to work in their area.

We worked all week to get the zebra to a place where he felt comfortable. We set up feeding stations and worked with King County to close nearby trails because cyclists and hikers with off-leash dogs were scaring the zebra.

Metal panels were installed today and the vet plans to tranquilize the zebra tomorrow so it can be safely moved into a transport vehicle.

We spoke with the owner on a 3-way call with the vet, who told him we should be allowed to continue our efforts and the other team should stand down. Despite this, the decision was made to let this group continue.

Mountain bikers working for the Danton group took to the closed trails and chased the zebra from our area to where they work.

The Danton group currently has the zebra in a metal panel corral. She drinks. David Danton displayed a banner on the property with the name of his company, Inspired Homes. They take no action to move her in a safe and secure transport vehicle. Given that David Danton has posted banners for his business on site, we believe he is waiting for the media to arrive to ensure the zebra is moved quickly to a safe space.

We are a group of residents who care about the zebra and have worked with its best interests in mind. We didn’t ask for money or media attention. Ultimately, we hope she is safely captured and removed from this circus.

David Danton appears in several Facebook videos with North Bend Mayor Mary Miller wearing a patch reading Zebra Roundup Crew, sponsored by Inspired Homes.
