After protests, UCI cancels Wednesday night classes – Orange County Register

UCI officials canceled evening classes Wednesday and advised staff to work remotely Thursday after a large group of police moved to disperse a pro-Palestinian encampment based on campus and arrest protesters.

The move came after school, around 100 protesters entered the physical sciences conference room on Wednesday, May 15 around 2:30 p.m., prompting UCI officials to call multiple police departments and issue a campus-wide alert. In that alert, school officials referenced what they described as a “violent protest” near the conference room, although the nature of that violence was unclear. Around 3:45 p.m., police pushed back demonstrators and arrested some people.

Around 4:30 p.m., the school announced that classes would be canceled for the remainder of Wednesday evening. It is unclear whether classes will be held in person on Thursday.
