After the release of the latest model, the ChatPGT-4o Mini, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that ChatGPT needed a “naming system overhaul.” Since its inception, OpenAI has consistently used the same naming system for ChatGPT and its various iterations.
On July 18, OpenAI announced a new model, which it described as “our most cost-effective small model.” The CEO shared a similar post on his X account (formerly Twitter), saying, “15 cents per million input tokens, 60 cents per million output tokens, 82% MMLU, and fast.” More importantly, we think people will really, really enjoy using the new model.
While many users liked the product, one user joked that the names of the ChatGPT models, which have expanded as OpenAI has grown, needed to be changed. Shea responded to Altman’s post and said, “You guys really need a naming system overhaul.” The entrepreneur took note of the same and replied, “lol yeah, we do.”
One of the company’s most efficient AI models, GPT-4o Mini is small and offers minimal latency (the time it takes to display a response). OpenAI says it will support text, image, video, and audio, as well as vision (image processing) and text, which are now supported by the API. “The model has a context window of 128,000 tokens, supports up to 16,000 output tokens per query, and has knowledge until October 2023. With the improved tokenizer shared with GPT-4o, handling non-English text is now even more cost-effective,” it added in the blog post.
OpeAI said that, as per its preparedness framework, it uses both machine and human assessments for safety. To detect potential hazards, the company also evaluated the AI model with 70 external experts from other disciplines.
