After testifying during the murder trial of Syed, Wilds retired in anonymity and refused the requests for an interview for the record for Series. In December 2014, after the release of the final of season one of the Podcast, he declared the interception during his first public interview that he thought that Sarah Koenig had “demonized” him.
Wilds has become a key witness to the accusation, while the defense argued that he was lying to protect himself. Koenig would raise the question of why Adnan, who at the end of the day did not seem that Near Jay, would have enlisted it to help bury a body. She also spent a lot of time talking about the inconsistencies in Jay’s history between her two interviews with detectives and her testimony to the trial.
“People have to achieve, we are trying cases in the real world,” Kevin Urick said, who continued Syed, told The Intercept when he was asked several times on Jay’s story. “We take our witnesses as we find them. We did not choose Jay to be an accomplice of Adnan. Adnan chose Jay. Remember, Jay committed a crime here. He was an accomplice after the fact in a murder. A very serious crime … People can very rarely tell the same way as it was warmed.”
“My wife knows my involvement in this case,” said Wilds. “Because I finally cooperated with the police and testified, I know that there are people at home who would consider me a mosquito net and would hurt me. So, for the most part, we were really protective about our privacy.”
He said to the interception that Syed had shown him Hae’s body in the trunk of his car in front of Wilds’ grandmother’s house, not in the parking lot for the best purchase – a revelation that was not relayed during the trial or by Series. But Wilds insisted that he had nothing to do with the act of killing Lee.
“There is nothing that will change the fact that this guy led in front of my grandmother’s house, jumped the trunk and had his dead girlfriend in the trunk,” he said. “Everything that will make it innocent do not involve me. Hae was dead before she reaches me. Everything that makes Adnan Innocent does not imply me. There is a specific point where I got involved in this area. What happened before that, I don’t know.”
