Additional affordable housing options for seniors coming to Aurora – NBC Chicago

Some good news arrived for Aurora seniors Tuesday morning, as the Aurora Housing Authority announced it would add more than five dozen new affordable housing units to its portfolio.

The authority owns and manages more than 800 rental units, and this year it is adding 70 more specifically dedicated to seniors.

“I know that one day I will have to find affordable housing,” said Jan Kuchmek, an Aurora resident.

She hopes to be one of the new residents moving into 1449 Senior Estates, located on the far west side of Aurora off Jericho Road.

“Oh, that would be great because I’ll know I have a place to go,” she said. “And it will be nice and I won’t have to worry about it.”

The new development is expected to be completed by September. It includes 70 single-family and duplex homes. They will also have pickleball courts and a clubhouse, according to officials.

“These are beautiful single-family homes and duplexes, whereas I’m building a mid-rise or high-rise building,” said Ralph Jordan, executive director of the Aurora Housing Authority. “Because we want to help people with an attached garage and live like they would live in a beautiful home.”

To be eligible, all residents living in the home must be 62 years or older and on a fixed income.

There is also a median income maximum of 60% that cannot be exceeded, officials say.

For example, a single resident earning no more than $46,380 would qualify, while a two-person household’s income cannot exceed $52,980.

Residents would pay 30% of their income in rent in the units, according to a press release.

Opening of pre-applications Wednesday April 3 at 8:00 a.m. To apply, visit the following link and click on the “request accommodation” link on their home page.
