With the booming NBA season, the Commissioner of the League Adam Silver has some ideas in his head on how to make the game even better.
On Wednesday, Silver continued at “The Dan Patrick Show” and was asked about the “wildest” changes than him and the League considered. Silver said that he thought he was the opportunity to go from 12 minutes to 10 minutes.
“I’m a fan of four 10 -minute quarters. I’m not sure that many others are,” said Silver. “It is such a dramatic change in the game. I think something like that should be more about it over time.”
Silver cited two main reasons for potential change: consistency with the international presentation of basketball and television. The NBA is the only league to play 48 -minute matches; The Olympic Games and University Basketball matches, for their part, last 40 minutes. (University matches are played like two 20 -minute halves.)
“Because this game is so global, one of the things we would like to see over time is to create a set of more coherent rules around the world around the game,” said Silver.
As for television, he noted that fans in person were not as worried about shortening the game, but that a game that lasted a little more than two hours was less conducive to television.
“Put aside what it would mean for records and things like that, I think that a two -hour format for a game is more consistent for modern television habits,” said Silver, adding later: “I do not Do not think that most fans would be disappointed if it was a two -hour presentation. “
Another advantage would be to brake the load management – the decision to rest the players who tormented the league to the point that it influenced heavy fines from 2023. Shorted matches would mean that there would be 656 minutes less During the regular 82 game season, which is the equivalent of more than 16 40 -minute games removed from the season.
Silver said it was just an idea that he was floating, not that he was really considered. “It is not entirely at this level,” he said.
But Silver also said that he had mentioned some of the MLB “dramatic” changes, such as the Pitch clock during NBA meetings as a point of contact to modify the game. “I am a fan of this That baseball has done, “said Silver. “I am a baseball fan and I think some of these changes have really increased commitment, the entertainment value of the game.”
Silver said that part of the attraction of baseball is the meaning of tradition, but that a support for tradition has not affected the will of the League to modify.
“If they are able to make these changes, we should certainly not be afraid to also look at the changes,” said Silver.
Silver highlighted other smaller changes than the NBA has brought over the years – modifying the last two minutes of the game for less stop, adding a challenge to the coach – and the biggest, such as adding The NBA Cup. All of these changes were made during Silver’s mandate as a league commissioner, a position he took care of in 2014.
Patrick has raised other criticisms, such as the fact that the NBA depends more and more than 3 points. But Silver has covered these kinds of changes.
“I also don’t want to react excessively to what we see in the game,” he said. “The game is going through transitions. I think the game is incredible right now, day after day. I think some criticisms are a bit unfair.”
