Aaron Ramsdale to Newcastle makes perfect sense – but Arsenal star’s arrival would spell bad news for Nick Pope

Newcastle have been told a move for the Arsenal goalkeeper makes “ideal sense”.

But talkSPORT co-hosts Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling believe his arrival at St James’ Park would lead to the departure of his England international Nick Pope.

The Gunners goalkeeper has already been admired by the Magpies and is now linked with a possible move to the North East following a lack of playing time at the Emirates.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have reignited their interest in Ramsdale, with Eddie Howe remaining a big fan of him after signing him from Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old wants to return to regular football after becoming Arsenal’s No.2 following the arrival of David Raya, on loan at Brentford, last summer.

The Geordies already have two star goalkeepers, Martin Dubravka and Pope, but with both being 35 and 31 respectively, the club is looking for a younger option in goal.

Asked if the move would be good for all parties, talkSPORT Breakfast co-host Ally McCoist said: “Yes, although there will be a bit of healthy competition once Nick Pope is gone. back in shape.

“I think in all honesty Dubravka came in and did a reasonable job, but I think Pope would automatically come back once he was fit.

“He’s (almost) 32 years old. Goalkeepers can play a lot longer than outfield players, that would certainly be ideal for Ramsdale.”

Jeff Stelling agreed with McCoist, but said Newcastle would also face a big decision if they decided to bring in Ramsdale.

He commented: “It makes perfect sense for Newcastle, but it means Nick Pope leaves the club. He doesn’t stay number two.

“They’ll keep Dubravka as No.2 and sell Nick Pope, and I don’t think there will be a shortage of takers because he’s a good goalkeeper.”

“Well, that’s the question,” McCoist added. “I think Newcastle need to weigh it up, do they think Ramsdale is a better goalkeeper than Nick Pope?

“Because I think Jeff is right, Pope is not going to sit back and play second fiddle at 32, which is a big decision.”

Since signing following Burnley’s relegation in 2022, Pope, who still has two years remaining on his current contract, has made 62 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale, who has been restricted to just six Premier League matches this season, was Arsenal’s No1 before falling down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order.

His contract also expires in 2026.
