Interest in Aaliyah’s Barbie doll is truly “one in a million” – and it shows, because the doll is already sold out.
The doll was released on January 16, which would have been the late R&B star’s 46th birthday. As of Thursday afternoon, the collectible item is listed as out of stock on Mattel’s website.
Barbie’s Instagram account posted a post on Thursday about the latest addition to her Barbie musical series, saying, “Today, on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the unparalleled legacy of the R&B princess as a once-in-a-generation talent.”
“A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, Aaliyah Barbie doll is remembered for her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations,” the post reads.
Inspired by her outfit in the “One in a Million” music video, the photos show the doll in a faux-leather sleeveless vest, a black faux-leather crop top, and silver-studded pants. It also features his iconic black aviator sunglasses and armbands to complete the look.
Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah’s brother, worked closely with Mattel to bring the doll to life and was “blown away” by the end result. He shared with TODAY.com that his sister would have loved the fashion-forward ensemble, noting that her favorite color was “all black.”
“It’s always fitted, it’s always a little sexy.” But it’s pants, so it brings that power and confidence and expression,” says Haughton. “It really just checked all the boxes of what my sister represents and also what Barbie represents, which is the empowerment and expression.”
